MEALS ON WHEELS OF CHEMUNG COUNTY
AWARDED NATIONAL CERTIFICATION

September 14, 2005 – Elmira, NY      On September 3, 2005 Meals on Wheels of Chemung County was awarded National Certification by the President of the Meals on Wheels Association of America.  There are only 60 nationally certified programs out of over 800 registered nutrition sites.  The designation recognizes a program that is performing its mission of providing nutrition services to the elderly and at risk populations in a manner consistent with national program standards.

The mission of the Nutrition Site Certification Program (which is 4 years old) is to ensure quality service, promotion of industry growth and organizational accountability by setting national program standards.

A program that becomes a national nutrition site-certified program indicates to the community, funding sources, and peers that the program meets or exceeds the national standards of excellence as evaluated by an independent review team made up of experts in their related fields.

A nutrition program seeking certification will be sent a site visit tool.  The tool is a series of forms that must be completed before the Certification Team travels for the on-site certification process.  The on-site visit toll consists of four parts: nutrition/kitchen review, administrative review, services review, and a fiscal review.  It is the applicant program’s responsibility to be prepared to demonstrate that it complies with the tool’s standards.

Meals on Wheels of Chemung County is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year.  Executive Director Darlene Ike said of the certification, “what a more fitting way to usher in our 35th year.  This certification is clear. It makes the public aware of my program’s excellence.”
