KITCHEN and BUILDING ASSISTANT
SCHEDULE: MONDAY – FRIDAY – 6:30am – 12:00pm – FLEXIBLE AS NEEDED
SUPERVISOR: KITCHEN COORDINATOR and/or EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Day to day assistance throughout the organization. This will include various duties in the preparation and packaging of meals, the cleanliness of the building and assisting volunteers. Needs to assess conditions and carry out tasks as needed, while adhering to a schedule. Work cooperatively with other staff and especially with the many volunteers.
Help prepare foods (salads, desserts, sandwiches etc.) including baking as
needed and then package them.
Help prepare vegetables, fruits, puddings etc. for following day menu if needed.
Assist cooks in the daily preparation of hot meals if needed.
Help volunteers by taking out their coolers and loading their vehicles.
Help keep building clean and within or above Health Department standards.
ie. Wipe up spills in work areas, or floor as needed
Wear required hair restraints, gloves etc. as required by Health Department
Help wash dishes, pots and pans if necessary.
Help Vacuum, mop floors, clean restrooms, collect and dispose of trash and recyclables.
Help keep stock organized and replaced properly, and help with monthly inventory if needed.
Help put stock away if necessary.
Help perform large kitchen cleanings as needed.
Perform any of the various kitchen tasks when volunteers are unavailable, help wherever needed. Maintain cleanliness and order of building, both inside and out.
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION: Volunteers have first choice and preference on any job. The kitchen assistant must take care not to tell volunteers what to do or how to do it. It is the Site Supervisor’s job to manage staff and volunteers and to delegate day to day work assignments.
This job requires the following physical activities:
Frequent crouching or bending at the knees
Continuous standing for periods of 3 hours or more
Lifting or carrying items weighing at least 40 pounds.
Frequent lifting of items from below the knees or above the shoulders.
